Killzone 3 impressions Posted by Adam Shepherd on Oct 14, 2010 15:07 (Oct 14, 2010 15:07) |
Killzone 3 has one hell of an act to follow. Killzone 2 still stands as a shining example of first person (near) perfection, having taken onboard the criticism of the first game Guerrilla Games then proceeded to make everything bad, brilliant and make everything good, great. In many ways Killzone 3 will be like the successor to Uncharted 2, in that many gamers will wonder how the hell the game can get any better. Fear not as the developers seem to have everything covered. One of the major stickling points from Killzone 2 was that the locations in which you battled the Helghast were very samey and dull looking. This is seemingly not the case in Killzone 3 based on the level that was shown. In the playable demo you play in and around a beautiful and snowy arctic pole, where some Helghast have made camp in an oil rig facility of sorts. Whilst snowy levels were the only ones playable it has been promised that the final game will feature many diverse places to shoot the Helghan troops, including an irradiated jungle and outer space, amongst others. One aspect of Killzone 3 that is certainly out of this world is the integration of 3D. The game supports full stereoscopic 3D and it certainly adds to the already immersive experience in a neat way. Objects in the immediate foreground such as the gun you are wielding pop out of the screen and a whole host of objects come alive when they are in three dimensions. Word of warning though, if you are going to watch someone playing in 3D make sure you have a pair of glasses yourself, because after a while my eyes began to hurt from staring at a blurry screen whilst waiting to play. Of course if you were playing in standard 2D there is still a great looking game to be ogled. If you thought Killzone 2 looked good you haven’t seen anything yet. Killzone 3 looks incredible, despite being a pre-alpha build; the snow found in the demo is easily a match for the white stuff in Uncharted 2, cold gusts of wind blow past Sev’s eyes regularly and the freezing arctic water violently crashes against icebergs while snowflakes drop gracefully to earth, a very stunning cinematic experience. Another feather in Killzone’s cap is the cacophony of sound you hear whilst playing. Guns all sound impressively meaty; explosions sound and look decidedly epic, also the jets that come from the jump pack troopers make for a frighteningly fiery sound. One of the most imposing new additions to the Helghast line-up is the jump pack troopers who swoop around overhead shooting down at Sev and co with the mounted machine guns they have, on a high difficulty setting I imagine they’re a bugger to take down. Unfortunately I didn’t get to square off against the jump pack helghast in the demo I chose (there were three short sections available) but watching them get shot and lose control of the jet pack, then crash, brought a smile to my face. ![]() The Helghast troops declined my offer of a snowball fight, those guys really are party poopers. |
