Dead Space 2 Demo Impressions Posted by Nicholas Schwinger on Dec 21, 2010 10:30 (Dec 21, 2010 10:30) |
Survival/Horror games always tend to be ones that I avoid, for obvious reasons. Now, considering that fact, I haven't played many horror games though I have dabbled in the likes of F.E.A.R. and Silent Hill. Dead Space was one of those that I skipped over simply because it didn't seem too appealing to me. I had always been told it was really one to give a chance, but I just didn't heed those suggestions. Now that I've played the Dead Space 2 demo, I've come to the realization I've missed out on a horrific yet thrilling game genre. As if Visceral Games knew that there were people who hadn't played the original Dead Space (what a surprise!), they included a nice little introduction video in the demo. What this video does is set up the story all the way from before the story of Dead Space up to the beginnings of Dead Space 2. I appreciated this because it allowed me to be caught up on the gist of the story so far while still being able to understand what was going on during the demo. ![]() The demo begins with returning protagonist Isaac Clarke moving through rooms filled with what look like cryo chambers. Some of the chambers look like something broke into them, or perhaps something broke out. After several very similar looking rooms an unexpected necromorph pops out of one of the chambers and takes you by surprise. This first encounter was particularly disturbing due to the silence beforehand and the occasional creak of machinery. More encounters similar to the previous one occur either while rushing around a corner to attack you, to sprout out of a seemingly dead body lying on the ground, or to jump through a nearby window. You're led into a chapel where an enormous creature pins you down and shakes you up while you attempt to shoot at it's flailing yellow weak limb. ![]() All of these necromorph encounters really manage to set the tone well for the game. There's always one thing you could be expecting, but then something completely different happens. One of these experiences is when you venture into a room overlooking windows out of the ship where you could expect to be ambushed, but instead you're attacked by some outside force as you battle against the affects of the vacuum of space. The visuals are quite stunning with the amount of detail that's been put into things. An example of this is the destructibility of the necromorphs and exactly how much damage you can inflict upon them. As far as I know there's also been some variation to the necromorphs that were included such as the creepy priest necromorph shown above. As mentioned before, I've never been one to play these types of games, but based on what I felt while playing this demo, it looks like I'll be looking forward to the full game. Look out for Dead Space 2 when it infects store shelves on January 25, 2011. |
