inFAMOUS 2 demo impressions Posted by Adam Shepherd on Jun 4, 2011 09:08 (350 days ago) |
After a long hiatus the Playstation Store kicks into gear with again with a superb offering from Sucker Punch; that offering being an extensive demo of their upcoming game infamous 2 When you first start the demo you are treated to the infamous series’ superb comic book-style cutscenes, with black outlines and a mix of still and moving images, which have managed to become even more dazzling with their bold and stark contrasting colours than in previous Sucker Punch titles. After the intro that recaps the infamous 1 story and sets you up nicely for infamous 2 we get into some in-game cutscene action; and I’m pleased to say that these interludes are vastly superior to the ones in the first game. When you see the scene where Cole gets off the boat with Zeke and Lucy Kuo (pronounced quo, as in Status Quo) you may immediately think, like I did, that infamous 2 has gone all Uncharted with its cutscenes. This seems to be working in the games favour as the witty back and forth banter associated with Nate and co is entertaining and seems to counter-balance the sometimes moody nature of the infamous games pretty well. Whilst the cutscenes aren’t quite as polished as those found in Naughty Dog’s PS3 powerhouse, with a sometimes jerky camera and un-synched lips, they are nonetheless a significant improvement over infamous 1’s. Once Cole’s conversation with Kuo is over you’re dropped into the game proper and are able to control Cole as you see fit, as long as you stick close to Kuo for the time being. Having just gotten off a boat, after presumably having done a previous mission, you find yourself on a wooden harbour with the new city of New Marias ahead of you and a misty swamp full of lush green vegetation behind you. Whilst the ocean around you may look sleek and inviting it will kill Cole if he jumps in; what with him being all electrical and that. This shouldn’t stop you from admiring the water and firing some of your ranged electricity into the water and watch it splash and dance around on the water’s surface though. After I had finished admiring the water, and the fireflies that were buzzing around some wooden lampposts, I moved on with the mission at hand; which involves following Kuo to the location of a blast core that was in danger of falling into the wrong hands. A blast core is a blue, shiny, crystal that bestowes Cole with heightened super powers; not that Cole’s powers are too shabby at the start of the demo. For anyone who has played the first infamous you will feel right at home when guiding Cole around in infamous 2 as the controls are exactly how they were in the first game. The slight differences with the way Cole feels this time around comes through his faster speed of movement. Whether Cole is running around on foot, clambering up a building, or soaring through the air with his static thrusters, he certainly move like lightning when the situation calls for it. A little into your walk around Marias with Kuo you’re ambushed by a group of militia men down a street lined with Creole Townhouses (a type of New Orleans building that has an iron balcony at the front of it). Thanks to the militia men making camp on the balconies of the Townhouses you can experience a portion of infamous 2’s new destructible environments in action. You could, quite easily, snipe the goons from their perch with your electric bolts but that isn’t nearly as fun as throwing a few shock grenades onto their balcony and watching it come crashing down onto the sidewalk. ![]() Cole and KUO stepping off a boat and onto the shores of New Marais. |
